Azerbaijani Ambassador presents his credentials to head of Roman Catholic Church

Azerbaijan's ambassador to the Holy See, Ilgar Mukhtarov, presented his credentials to the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, SIA refers to local media.

“The Holy See and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation enjoy fruitful cooperation. A number of historical monuments of world importance restored by the Foundation in the Vatican are considered great works in the field of cultural heritage protection,” said head of the Catholic Church His Holiness Pope Francis as he met with Azerbaijani Ambassador.

Pope Francis noted that these projects serve to protect the world's cultural, historical and religious heritage, as well as develop intercultural and interreligious relations.

At the meeting, Ambassador Mukhtarov conveyed the greetings of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva to Pope Francis and invited him to visit Azerbaijan. The ambassador said that relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See, based on mutual respect, have made great progress over the thirty-year period. During this period, he mentioned the official visits of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva to the Holy See, as well as the visit of Pope Francis to Azerbaijan.

The Ambassador also noted that the establishment of the Azerbaijani embassy in the Holy See is an indicator of the importance given to bilateral relations.
