Press Council's appeal to the Euronews TV channel and "Le Figaro" publication
Azerbaijan's Press Council made an official appeal to the Euronews TV channel and Le Figaro publication, SIA refers to the agency's press service.
The appeal reads:
"It is a shame that the contents of the speeches of some persons who spoke during the campaign held on December 25 in the city of Khankendi, which is in the temporary control zone of the Russian Peacekeeping Contingent of the Karabakh region, were published in the "Le Figaro" newspaper and the French service of "Euronews" in a unilateral and biased manner. The appeal of the Press Council, expressing the legitimate dissatisfaction of Azerbaijani journalists as a whole, is that it is unacceptable for any media to become a forum for propaganda that serves violence, division, conflict, and is against the professional principles of journalism.
Karabakh is a sovereign territory of Azerbaijan recognized by the UN, Khankendi is an ancient city of Azerbaijan, and the people living there are citizens of Azerbaijan. But "Le Figaro" newspaper and the French service of "Euronews" did not take into account not only the sovereign rights of Azerbaijan, but also the interests of ordinary citizens of Armenian origin living in the Karabakh region, while covering the campaign held on December 25. They are the issue of the criminals who occupied the Azerbaijani lands for nearly thirty years and their actions presented in the context of the interests of their followers.
We regret to inform you that "Le Figaro" and the French service of "Euronews" have challenged those who serve divisiveness and work against the peace agenda in the region, rather than the efforts made to ensure stability in the South Caucasus and peaceful coexistence of peoples. Such disregard for journalistic values is inadmissible and unacceptable.
In accordance with the important principles of journalism such as impartiality and objectivity, "Le Figaro" and "Euronews" could have taken an interest in the ongoing campaign of Azerbaijani civil society representatives on the Lachin-Khankendi road for 15 days and describe the true picture of the issue, taking into account the positions of all parties. Unfortunately, we did not see this professional approach from them.
"Le Figaro" publication, by organizing and spreading the non-objective appeal of French well-known public representatives against Azerbaijan, tries to form such an image that Azerbaijan is allegedly carrying out a policy of ethnic cleansing against Karabakh Armenians. It is clear that this statement was made as a result of the efforts of the Armenian lobby in France and serves its interests. We consider it important to note that the coverage of some material by a mass media organization in accordance with the political conjuncture is contrary to the principles of the "International Munich Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Journalists". Journalists and mass media organizations should avoid these kind of biases and work for the public to know the truth.
Such negative trends seriously harm the relations between the people of Azerbaijan and France, and accelerate the formation of a negative opinion about France in the Azerbaijani public.
The Azerbaijan Press Council, which unites famous media organizations and journalistic organizations of Azerbaijan, calls on the newspaper "Le Figaro" and the French service of "Euronews" to be sensitive to the realities of Karabakh, invites them to respect the norms and principles of international law, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan, which is also recognized by the French state. The Council believes that these media bodies, in general, the French media should not give a platform to those who want to realize their political adventure plans in the South Caucasus. The media bodies should see the reality and be based on the principles of justice. Only in this way, it is possible to contribute to the creation of lasting peace in the region, to the development and progress of the geography where the Azerbaijani and Armenian peoples coexist, and to the protection of human rights and freedoms represented.
We would like to believe that our appeal will be sincerely accepted, appropriate conclusions will be drawn, the points we have highlighted as a criterion for ensuring a fair approach to the South Caucasus region, which has a rather sensitive internal nature, including the newspaper "Le Figaro" and the French service of "Euronews", and that this appeal will be taken into account in the future activity of the European media and France as a whole."
