The Helicobacter pylori bacterium determined through a breath test at the Central Customs Hospital

A new laboratory test has started to be applied in the Medical laboratory of the Central Customs Hospital. Now, the service of determining Helicobacter pylori bacteria through a new laboratory breath test in just 25 minutes has started to be provided.

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which causes gastric and intestinal ulcers, gastric cancer and atrophic gastritis, is identified by a non-invasive, easy-to-perform 14C-Ur breath test, without causing any discomfort to the patient. The 14C-Ur breath test is accepted as the Gold Standard by the World Health Organization. The sensitivity of the test is 95%, and the specificity is 95-100%.

Helicobacter pylori secretes the enzyme urease. If this enzyme is present in the stomach, 14C-urea taken orally (given to the patient in the form of capsules) is hydrolyzed into carbon dioxide and ammonia. It is absorbed into the blood and leaves the lungs with air, and the amount is measured in exhaled breath. The detection of some marked CO2 is indicative of active Helicobacter pylori infection.

Here are the rules for passing the Helicobacter pylori test:

✅ Before the test, you should not eat for at least 6 hours, you should not smoke or drink water for 1 hour;

✅ Do not take any antibiotics the last 2 weeks prior;

✅ If stomach medications are taken (proton pump inhibitors, bismuth drugs), they should be stopped;

✅ The test prescribed for the purpose of treatment monitoring should be carried out 6 weeks after the end of the treatment;

Helicobacter pylori breath test procedure:

✅ A capsule is given to the patient;

✅ Test is performed after injection;

✅ The result is obtained 5 minutes after the test.
