In the “Doctor’s Advice”

Section, Khumar Novruzova, a therapist at the Central Customs Hospital, spoke about “3 Frequently Asked Questions About Bronchial Asthma.”

A diagnosis of bronchial asthma can sometimes cause patients anxiety and raise a number of questions. “Will I have to live with this disease for the rest of my life?”, “Can an inhaler harm my health?”, and “Will I become dependent on the medication?” are among the questions frequently asked by patients.

First of all, it should be noted that asthma is a chronic disease; however, with proper treatment, it can be effectively controlled. Being diagnosed with asthma does not mean that a person has to completely change their daily life or give up physical activity. The main goals of treatment are to control symptoms, prevent exacerbations, and enable patients to continue their normal daily activities and maintain a good quality of life.

There are also certain misconceptions about inhalers. In particular, some people believe that medicines containing inhaled steroids are harmful because they are “hormonal.” However, when used correctly and as prescribed by a doctor, these medications play an important role in controlling asthma. Inhaled steroids act primarily in the airways and help reduce inflammation.

Some patients believe that regular use of an inhaler may lead to dependence. Inhalers do not cause addiction. The need for long-term treatment is not related to drug dependence. Since asthma is a chronic disease, some patients may require long-term therapy.

My recommendation as a doctor is not to make decisions about asthma treatment on your own. You should not stop taking medication, change the dosage, or use medicines based on someone else’s advice without consulting your doctor. Since the course of the disease varies from patient to patient, treatment should also be tailored to each individual.

Having a diagnosis of asthma does not mean giving up on a full and active life. With proper treatment, regular medical supervision, and a responsible approach to therapy, asthma can be effectively controlled.
