On May 12, 2026, a scientific seminar titled “What We Know About Medical Genetics and Its Innovations” was jointly organized by the Scientific-Practical and Training Center of the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee and the Central Customs Hospital.
The event was attended by the Head of the Central Customs Hospital — Chief Physician Bakhtiyar Musayev, Deputy Head Naida Mahmudova, Head of the Polyclinic Department Tamilla Aliyeva, department heads, physicians, and medical residents.
In his welcoming speech, Chief Physician Bakhtiyar Musayev highlighted the growing role of medical genetics in modern healthcare, emphasizing the importance of genetic research in early diagnosis, personalized treatment approaches, and reproductive health. He also noted that the development of modern medicine is accelerating through the integration of genetic sciences into clinical practice, and that advances in this field provide essential support in physicians’ daily work.
During the event, general information was presented on the current challenges in medical genetics, the role of genetic screening in reproductive health, and the application of new molecular diagnostic methods in clinical practice. In the scientific part of the seminar, well-known specialists delivered presentations.
The first speaker, Dr. Ilya Kanivets, presented a report titled “A Genetic Perspective on Preconception Care,” emphasizing the importance of assessing genetic risks in family planning and early diagnosis.
Dr. Kamala Huseynova delivered a presentation titled “Hope for a Healthy Pregnancy: PGD-NGS and NIPT-NGS,” providing detailed information on the application of preimplantation genetic diagnosis and non-invasive prenatal testing in modern medicine, as well as the management of high-risk pregnancies.
The next speaker, Leyla Abbasova, presented on “The Importance of Proper Pre-Analytical Preparation for Genetic Tests (PGT-A, NIPT, WES),” explaining the stages that affect the quality of laboratory diagnostics and the role of proper sample preparation in ensuring accurate results.
Following the presentations, extensive scientific discussions were held with participants of the event. Numerous questions were answered, and opinions were exchanged regarding the integration of innovations in medical genetics into clinical practice.
