“Organ Transplantation from the Perspectives of Medicine and Law” was held at the Central Customs Hospital

On January 24, 2026, the 1st Medical Students’ Forum on the topic “Organ Transplantation from the Perspectives of Medicine and Law” was held through the joint organization of the Scientific-Practical and Training Center of the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee and the Central Customs Hospital, with the support of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the Public Association “Doctors and Medical Students”.
At the opening of the forum, which took place at the Central Customs Hospital, a speech was delivered by the Deputy Head of the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee, PhD in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Ismayil Efendiyev. He conveyed the greetings of the Head of the Medical Service Department Jeyhun Mammadov and the Head of the Scientific-Practical and Training Center, Deputy Chairman of the Health Committee of the Milli Majlis Rashad Mahmudov, and highly praised the significant achievements made in the field of organ transplantation in the country in recent years. Ismayil Efendiyev emphasized the continuous and effective cooperation between the Central Customs Hospital and the Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health, noting that transplant operations at the hospital are carried out by a highly qualified professional team in full compliance with international standards.
Following this, the floor was given to Yagana Abbasova, Chairperson of the Board of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan, PhD in Medical Sciences, anesthesiologist-resuscitator. She particularly highlighted the activities of the Central Customs Hospital as the medical institution where the first successful organ transplantation from a deceased donor in the country was performed in 2025, and delivered an extensive presentation on the topic “Organ Transplantation from Deceased Donors: Criteria for the Determination of Brain Death.”
Within the framework of the forum, Mirjalal Kazimi, PhD in Medical Sciences, transplant surgeon of the Department of Surgery and Organ Transplantation of the Central Customs Hospital, spoke on “Transplantation and Human Life: Scientific Achievements, Current Realities, and Future Prospects.” Mehriban Aliyeva, physician-coordinator of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health, delivered a presentation entitled “The Power of Giving Life: Why Should I Become a Donor?” Additionally, Sayyara Hagverdiyeva, lawyer of the same Center, spoke on “Donation and Transplantation: Legal Framework and Social Impacts.” The presentations were met with great interest by the students, followed by interactive discussions and detailed answers to numerous questions from participants.
At the conclusion of the event, Shehla Mirzazade, a specialist of the Scientific-Practical and Training Center of the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee, provided information on the scientific and practical activities carried out by the Medical Service Department, invited students to actively participate in upcoming events, and presented a slide show reflecting the scientific and social activities organized in 2025.
In the closing session of the forum, Gülay Novruzova, President of the Public Association “Doctors and Medical Students,” expressed her gratitude to all institutions and individuals involved in organizing the event and voiced her confidence that cooperation with the Central Customs Hospital would continue successfully in the next stages as well.
The forum concluded with the presentation of gifts prepared by the Medical Service Department of the State Customs Committee and the Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health to students who actively participated in the discussions, followed by a commemorative group photo.
