The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) plan to vaccinate some 600,000 children in the Gaza Strip against polio, the Al Jazeera television channel reported.
According to the TV channel, more than 591,000 children aged under ten will be inoculated during the vaccination campaign from February 22 through 26.
According to a WHO survey, the polio virus was detected in 88% of samples taken in various Gaza neighborhoods. The virus is rapidly spreading across the war-ravaged enclave.
