Joint statement issued regarding situation in Azerbaijan's Sarsang reservoir

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan, and the State Water Resources Agency issued a joint Statement regarding the situation in the Sarsang reservoir, SİA reports.

The statement reads:

"The Sarsang reservoir which was created in 1976 on Tartarchay and is currently in the territory of Azerbaijan where the Russian peacekeeping contingent is currently deployed, has been purposefully used as a means of ecological and socio-economic terrorism by Armenia and the forces under its patronage for more than thirty years. Armenia’s actions are evaluated as ecological aggression aimed at creating humanitarian and ecological problems for the citizens of Azerbaijan according to Resolution No. 2085 dated January 26, 2016, adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Along with environmental aggression, Armenia and forces under its patronage caused and continues to cause a lot of damage to the economy of Azerbaijan by maliciously preventing the supply of water from the reservoir in the seasons when irrigation is required to the areas of Tartar, Aghdam, Barda, Goranboy, Yevlakh and Aghjabadi regions, which have great agricultural potential and fertile soil resources. At the same time, it caused the imbalance of natural resources by the intensive use of underground water for the purpose of meeting the population's drinking water demand and carrying out partial irrigation.

We call on Armenia to stop the actions that lead to the violation of basic human rights, degradation of the region's ecosystem, and the loss of fauna and flora as one of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations."
