Russia reports 17 cases of infection with new variant of coronavirus EG.5

Russian specialists have identified 17 cases of infection with a new variant of the coronavirus EG.5 or 'eris' from April to August, Russia's consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor told journalists.

"The Russian Federation detected the first isolated cases of infection with the EG.5 variant in April 2023 (in Moscow, Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, Magadan and Irkutsk Regions, Krasnodar Territory, the Republics of Buryatia and Khakassia). A total of 17 cases, or 0.24% of all infections between April and August 2023," the statement said.

A new variant of the EG.5 coronavirus is spreading faster than its predecessors, Rospotrebnadzor said. At the same time, experts do not observe changes in the severity of the disease caused by the EG.5 coronavirus variant.
