Today marks the fifth anniversary of the liberation of Sugovushan settlement and Talish village in the Aghdara district of Azerbaijan from Armenian occupation, SİA informs.
On October 3, 2020, the Azerbaijani army cleared both settlements of Armenian occupiers. On the same day, the three-colored State flag of Azerbaijan was raised in Sugovushan and Talish. The village with the ancient name Sugovushan, which during the Soviet era was called Madagiz, was first liberated from occupation by the Azerbaijani army in 1991-1992.
However, in April 1994, it was re-occupied by the Armenian Armed Forces. After the occupation of Sugovushan, the Armenian forces established military units there.
Military unit No. 49971 was considered one of the best in the Armenian army in Karabakh. In addition, military unit No. 33651, which the Armenian army designated as the "6th defensive area," also held positions in Sugovushan. The battle for the liberation of Sugovushan is considered one of the most important fights of the Azerbaijani army on the northeastern section of the front during the Second Karabakh War.
During the fighting in the Sugovushan-Aghdara direction, four tanks of the 77th tank battalion of the Armenian armed forces were destroyed, and three more tanks were captured as trophies.
As a result of artillery strikes by Azerbaijani troops on the defense areas of the fifth mountain rifle regiment of the Armenian Armed Forces in the Aghdara direction, four combat vehicles of this regiment were destroyed, which suffered heavy losses in dead and wounded. Personnel of several units of the regiment abandoned their combat positions and fled the battlefield.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a law renaming the village of Madagiz to the village of Sugovushan. On October 3, 2021, President Ilham Aliyev raised the flag of Azerbaijan in the villages of Sugovushan and Talish.
By the relevant orders of President Ilham Aliyev dated December 29, 2020, and June 24, 2021, a group of servicemen was awarded the medal "For the liberation of Sugovushan."
Along with the villages of Sugovushan and Talish, on October 3, the villages of Mahdili, Chakhirli, Ashagi Maralyan, Shaybay, Guyjag of the Jabrayil district and the village of Ashagi Abdurrahmanli of the Fuzuli district were liberated from the occupation of the Armenian armed forces.
