Man who attacked Azerbaijan's embassy executed in Iran

The attacker on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran has been executed this morning, SİA informs, citing Iran's judiciary.

The sentence was carried out after the Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the court of first instance.

As a reminder, on the morning of January 27, 2023, an armed attack took place on the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Iran. The attacker forced his way through the diplomatic mission's security post and killed the head of security, Orkhan Asgarov, with a Kalashnikov rifle. Two other embassy security officers, Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov, were injured while repelling the attack.

On January 30, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan evacuated embassy staff from Tehran, and the embassy’s operations were suspended. In connection with the attack, the State Security Service of Azerbaijan initiated a criminal case under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code.

Orkhan Asgarov was buried in the Second Alley of Martyrs. On February 3, 2023, by decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Orkhan Rizvan oglu Asgarov was posthumously awarded the "For the Motherland" medal. Vasif Natig oglu Taghiyev was awarded the 1st Degree "Rashadat" (Bravery) Order, and Mahir Kamil oglu Imanov received the "For the Motherland" medal.

Following the incident, the embassy's activities in Tehran remained suspended. Embassy staff and their families were evacuated from Tehran to Baku on January 29, 2023.

As a result of negotiations between the two countries, on July 15, 2024, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Iran resumed its activities at a new address, and the ambassador, along with the staff, returned to Iran.

The trial of Yasin Hoseinzadeh, who was found guilty of committing the terrorist attack, lasted two years. At the conclusion of the trial, the Iranian Ministry of Justice announced that he had been sentenced to death. The Supreme Court of Iran upheld the death sentence, and the case was transferred to Tehran for execution.
