AZAL's Baku-Grozny passenger plane crashes - UPDATED

52 firefighters and 11 pieces of equipment have been deployed to extinguish the fire at the site of the plane crash near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan, SİA reports citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan.

An AZAL passenger plane flying from Baku to Grozny crashed, SİA reports.

The plane sent an "SOS" signal over the Caspian Sea.

The plane, which then headed to Kazakhstan for an emergency landing, crashed at Aktau airport.

According to preliminary information, there were 67 passengers and 5 crew members on board.

According to the statement given by AZAL to SİA, the "Azerbaijan Airlines" aircraft performing flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny, an "Embraer 190" airplane, made an emergency landing 3 km near the city of Aktau.

According to initial information, the incident was caused by a collision of the aircraft with a flock of birds.
