Violent thunderstorms wreak havoc across 24 French departments

A powerful storm front that engulfed 24 departments of France yesterday has caused significant damage to many municipalities, according to SİA, which cites French media.

In the city of Évreux, the administrative center of the Normandy department of Eure, the local prefecture reported severe flooding in businesses, shops, and residential areas, along with damaged roofs. An astonishing 40 mm of rain fell in just 2.5 hours. In the town of Le Mesnil-Jourdain, a lightning strike ignited a house fire.

The department of Vosges was pummeled by hailstones the size of apricots for 20 minutes, according to the mayor of Gérardmer. The local weather station recorded an astounding 79.8 mm of precipitation in just 45 minutes, exceeding the monthly average. The storm damaged roads and toppled trees.

Media reports indicate damage to municipal facilities and residential buildings in other French departments as well. The French thunderstorm observatory Keraunos detected an incredible 54,365 lightning strikes during the storms.
