US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to initiate elimination of the Department of Education.
"We take a very historic action that was 45 years in the making. In a few moments, I will sign an executive order to begin eliminating the Federal Department of Education once and for all," he said on Thursday before signing the document.
The complete closure of the Department of Education requires the approval of a corresponding bill by Congress. However, to pass the initiative to abolish the Department in the Senate, the Republicans who control the upper chamber would need the support of at least seven Democrats, which is unlikely.
