Baku Climate Week hosts roundtable on strategies for resilient agribusiness

As part of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW), a roundtable on “Climate-Resilient Agribusiness: Aligning Strategy, Investment, and Policy” convened leading figures from Azerbaijan’s agricultural and climate sectors, SİA reports.

The discussion gathered Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Special Representative of the President for Climate Issues and President of COP29; Majnun Mammadov, Minister of Agriculture; Viorel Gutu, Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia and Assistant Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); as well as representatives from agribusiness companies, associations, and sector experts.

Opening the event, Babayev highlighted that climate change poses wide-ranging challenges while creating new opportunities. He stressed that adaptive strategies must be paired with efforts to harness these emerging prospects in agriculture.

Minister Mammadov described climate change as both an environmental and socio-economic challenge, particularly affecting the agricultural sector. He emphasized the need for digital transformation across all farming operations to reduce climate risks and optimize water and soil management. Mammadov also outlined Azerbaijan’s systematic efforts to modernize agriculture, develop digital farming solutions, enhance rural development, and expand state support for the sector.

Gutu underlined the importance of developing sustainable food and agricultural systems to meet global challenges. He noted that deploying digital technologies can mitigate risks, increase productivity, and safeguard the environment, while international cooperation remains essential.

Additional participants highlighted the expansion of farmer support tools, promotion of entrepreneurship in agriculture, improved financial accessibility, and strategies to attract investment. The roundtable concluded with proposals aimed at driving long-term growth and resilience in Azerbaijan’s agribusiness sector.
