CIS statistical agencies need to develop their methodology to address new challenges, including AI
CIS statistical agencies need to improve their methodology to address new challenges and requirements, Konstantin Laikam, chairman of the CIS Interstate Statistical Committee, told journalists on the sidelines of the third CIS International Statistical Forum, currently underway in Baku, SİA informs.
He recalled that the first forum was held in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the second in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. According to Laikam, representatives of statistical agencies from 19 countries and international organizations working on statistics are participating in the Baku forum.
"Life is extremely dynamic, and new phenomena are emerging that official statistics must quickly and quantitatively assess. We are working on this. This is a very complex challenge; a methodology needs to be developed. Therefore, today we will be working on developing statistical methodology," he noted.
Laikam emphasized that the second major and most complex challenge for statistical agencies is the digitalization of society: "You know that business, personal life, and public life have all gone digital. This is creating a huge data stream, which sometimes constitutes alternative statistics. Statistical agencies need to understand what this data is, how it was generated, what methodology they used, and what survey methods they used."
He noted that this new data needs to be structured.
"Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) will generate new alternative information, new alternative statistics, even more rapidly. Therefore, we need to understand how to process and publish it," he added.
Laikam emphasized the need to also focus on improving statistical literacy globally, which is currently low.
