Azerbaijan is building the largest Battery Storage Systems in the region

Azerbaijan is entering a new stage in the energy sector. The creation of large-scale Battery Storage Systems (BESS) has begun for the rapid development of renewable energy sources (RES) in the country. “AzerEnergy” OJSC told SIA that the organization is creating Battery Storage Systems with a total capacity of 250 megawatts and a capacity of 500 megawatt hours in the territory of the 500 kilovolt “Absheron” substation near the capital and the 220 kilovolt “Agdash” substation located in the central part of the country. Currently, the necessary construction work is being carried out on the ground and work is underway to manufacture the elements on order and bring them to the site. The application of systems of this scale will be the first not only in Azerbaijan, but also in the CIS as a whole.

The creation of Battery Storage Systems is very important in terms of increasing the stability of the energy system, frequency stability, reducing outages in BOEMs, compensating for active power shortages, meeting peak loads, smoothing the load schedule during sunset hours, and restoring the energy system from scratch in the event of an accident. The application of these systems will not only strengthen Azerbaijan's energy independence, but also ensure the reliable operation of our energy system in parallel and island modes with the synchronous zone of a neighboring country.

It should be noted that AzerEnergy is currently implementing a large-scale program to integrate 2 gigawatt solar and wind power plants to be built in the country by 2027 into the grid. Within the framework of the program, in addition to the application of energy storage technologies, one of the largest substations in the republic - the 500/330 kilovolt "Navahi" Energy Junction - is being built to serve as the main junction substation in the country, and from there, 500 and 330 kilovolt high-voltage transmission lines are being laid to various directions of the republic, and complex work is being carried out to improve digitalization and network management.
