The US is seeking to get Europe to stop buying Russian oil

The administration of US President Donald Trump wants European countries to stop buying oil from Russia and join sanctions against Moscow's trading partners. This was reported by the American publication New York Post (NYP) citing a senior White House official.

NYP cites data from a February report by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), according to which Europe spent more money on importing Russian oil ($25.5 billion) in 2024 than on military support for Ukraine ($21.7 billion).

According to the publication, along with the refusal of Russian oil, Washington expects Europe to support sanctions against the main importers of Russian energy resources: China, India, and Turkey. NYP notes that this idea is not new, but the White House returned to its active consideration after attempts to bring Russia and Ukraine to peace through negotiations reached a dead end. "I am very disappointed in President Putin," Donald Trump said the day before.

In August, the United States imposed 50 percent duties on Indian imports. As declared in the corresponding presidential decree, this decision was related to India's purchase of Russian oil.

On September 1, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not acting as he had promised during negotiations with Donald Trump in Alaska. In this regard, according to the official, the American government will "closely study" possible options for action with respect to Russia.
