Starting December 1, 2024, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has begun supplying natural gas to SPP, Slovakia's largest state-owned energy supplier, SİA informs, referring to the SOCAR.
The gas supply is being carried out within the framework of cooperation based on a short-term pilot contract between SOCAR and SPP. The companies aim to develop a longer-term energy partnership.
SOCAR continues to diversify its export destinations through these gas supplies. Thus, Slovakia has become the twelfth country to receive Azerbaijani gas, along with Türkiye, Georgia, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, and North Macedonia.
Gas supply to Slovakia is being implemented within the framework of the Solidarity Ring (STRING) initiative.
In May 2024, Richard Kvasnovsky, Executive Director of the Slovak Gas and Oil Association (SGOA), stated that within the STRING initiative, Azerbaijan's gas supply to Europe could initially amount to 5 billion cubic meters per year.
In 2023, Slovakia’s total gas consumption stood at 45.537 terawatt/hours (4.23 billion cubic meters).
