Russian MFA comments on the relocation of Lebanese Armenians to occupied territories of Azerbaijan

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) commented on the relocation of Lebanese Armenians to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, APA’s Moscow correspondent reports.

"Russia is aware of the intention of the de facto leadership of Nagorno-Karabakh to settle Armenians leaving Lebanon in the territories controlled," Russian MFA spokesperson Maria Zakharova while answering to the question of APA’s Moscow correspondent on "Last week, social networks circulated information about the resettlement of an Armenian family from Lebanon in the city of Shusha, which has great historical and spiritual significance for the people of Azerbaijan. This is a gross violation of international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions. According to the 4th Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, the occupying power must not relocate its civilian population to the occupied territories. How does the Russian Foreign Ministry comment on this fact? ”

“We have read the news regarding the intention of two Lebanese families to move to Nagorno Garabagh. We have no information about the actual flow of Lebanese refugees to Nagorno Garabagh and adjacent territories.

We consider that now it is necessary to focus on the resumption of the negotiation process aimed at resolving the Nagorno Garabagh conflict, including the problem of refugees and internally displaced persons in the region.

OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs hold telephone consultations with Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers on 14 September. They have suggested mediators' proposals, as well as a separate meeting of the co-chairs with the ministers as part of the steps to be taken to resolve the Nagorno Garabagh conflict. We hope for a positive response of the parties,” M. Zakharova emphasized.
