Citizens advised to close Facebook accounts

The European Commission has warned EU citizens that they should close their Facebook accounts if they want to keep information private from US security services, finding that current Safe Harbour legislation does not protect citizen’s data.

A similar statement was made at the trial in a hearing of the case brought by the Austrian human rights activist Maximilian Schrems against the social networking site Facebook. Schrems is a member of a group of activists Europe-v-Facebook, which believes the US social network violates civil rights of EU users. In the process, complaints were also filed against companies, such as Apple, Microsoft and Yahoo.

Schrems says that companies operating inside the EU should not transfer private data to the United States under Safe Harbour protections. The European Commission admits Safe Harbour framework cannot ensure privacy of EU citizens’ data when sent to the US by American internet firms. The European Parliament once again urged to suspend the agreement. The trial is expected to proceed on June 24, 2015
