Armenia counts men

A census of men born between 1954 and 1996 has started in the Armenian capital, according to "Zhamanak" newspaper. "It looks as though the Armenian authorities realize they are not insured against a possible outbreak of war and are holding a census for this purpose," the newspaper writes.

It gives another theory for the census, however: the authorities may be trying to discourage the population from political activity by frightening them with the threat of war.

"It was not right to add to the list people who emigrated to the Czech Republic or Canada 10 to 15 years ago".
