There were no survivors after an Indonesian plane crashed into a mountainous region with 54 people aboard, the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency said.

Rescue crews reached the wreckage of the airliner Tuesday, after their initial efforts were hindered by poor weather. The flight went missing Sunday, and the crash site wasn't located until the following day.

"The plane was totally destroyed and all the bodies were burned and difficult to identify," National Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyostated.

The team on the ground had recovered 53 bodies, said Bambang Soelistyo, the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency. The bodies will be taken by helicopter to Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, for identification.
