Sony has sold 20.2 million units of PlayStation 4 as of March 1, making PS4 its fastest-selling videogame console ever, the company said Wednesday.
The PS4 was launched in November 2013, meaning it easily reached the 20 million threshold in less than a year and a half.
It took two years and eight months to sell that many units of the original PlayStation, and a year and seven months for the second version. Sony hasn't disclosed figures for PlayStation 3.
By comparison, Japanese rival Nintendo Co.NTDOY 0.00 per cent had sold 9.2 million units of the Wii U console between November 2012 and this past December, while Microsoft Corp. sold 10 million units of Xbox One in roughly 12 months ending in November.
Console makers are being challenged by free smartphone-based video games and need to find a way to attract casual fans, analysts say.
"The challenge for console makers is broadening their offering longer term to a wider audience who are playing smartphones," David Gibson, an analyst for Macquarie Capital Securities, said Wednesday.
