Celebrities who are atheists

Religion is a HUGE part of our culture. However, not everyone is on board with the idea that God exists. Some are staunch atheists that don’t believe in any higher power while others identify as agnostic which is just a sophisticated way of saying I don’t really know or care if there is a God. Some claim to be more spiritual which I’m assuming means they do a lot of yoga.

ANGELINA JOLIE

In 2000, Jolie was quoted as saying, "There doesn’t need to be a God for me. There’s something in people that’s spiritual, that’s godlike. I don’t feel like doing things just because people say things, but I also don’t really know if it’s better to just not believe anything, either." Yep, Jolie definitely does yoga.

BRAD PITT

Jolie’s husband addressed the topic in 2009 when he said, "I’m probably 20% atheist and 80% agnostic. I don’t think anyone really knows. You’ll either find out or not when you get there, until then there’s no point thinking about it." If I was Brad, I don’t know if I could find the time either. I would be too busy being beautiful and talented.

EMMA THOMPSON

Emma takes a more firm stance than Pitt, stating, "I’m an atheist. I suppose you can call me a sort of libertarian anarchist. I regard religion with fear and suspicion. It’s not enough to say that I don’t believe in God. I actually regard the system as distressing. I am offended by some of the things said in the Bible and the Koran, and I refute them." Damn, Emma. Tell us how you really feel.

JODIE FOSTER

In a 2007 interview, Foster claimed, "I’m an atheist but I absolutely love religions and the rituals. Even though I don’t believe in God, we celebrate pretty much every religion in our family with the kids." I wonder if they celebrate Chrismukkah like The Cohen’s. Yes, that was a reference to "The O.C." You’re welcome.

JULIANNE MOORE

In 2002, while on "Inside the Actor’s Studio," Moore responded to the question: If heaven exists, what would you like God to say at the pearly gates. She answered, "Well, I guess you were wrong. I do exist!" I’m not really all that surprised. After all, she’s Dr. Sarah Harding from Jurassic Park and as we know, science and religion don’t mix too well.

MORGAN FREEMAN

In 2o12, after being asked if he thought God was an invention, Freeman replied, "Yes. Has anybody ever seen hard evidence? What we get is theories from our earlier prophets. Now, people who think that God invented us think that the Earth can’t be more than 6,000 years old. So I guess it’s a question of belief." This one was kind of surprising seeing as Freeman actually played God in Bruce Almighty.

HUGH HEFNER

In 2012, Hefner wrote in an editorial, "When religion rather than reason dictates legislation, do not expect logic with your law." Not that surprising coming from a guy who is as-ahem-sexually liberated as Hefner.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY

Knightley was quoted as saying, "If only I wasn’t an atheist, I could get away with anything. You’d just ask for forgiveness and then you’d be forgiven." Don’t worry, Keira. You’re young, beautiful, and famous so we’re pretty sure you could get away with a lot if you wanted.
