Head of Tunisia's ruling party said assassination of a leftist opposition leader was an attempt to foment chaos and destabilize the country.
"Plots against Tunisia are doomed to fail. This incident has targeted the Tunisian model which offers a unique experience in relations between secularists and groups with Islamic tendencies. It is aimed at mongering a war between Islamist and modernist families," Rached Ghannouchi told The Anadolu Agency.
The assassination of Chokri Belaid, the 47-year-old leftist opposition leader, Wednesday in capital Tunis sent thousands of protestors onto the streets around the country who chanted angrily against the ruling Ennahda party and its leader.
Ghannouchi described the killing as "an act of sabotage," saying it was an attack on his party and on the government's other coalition partners.
"The Arab Spring revolutions, which have managed to bring together Islam, democracy and the West, are tried to be undermined and this is the work of arms dealers led by the Zionist movement,"Ghannouchi said.
