Instagram cuts off Twitter photo integration

Although Instagram photos can still be shared on Twitter, they no longer display correctly because the company has disabled its integration with Twitter cards, the feature that ensures media content is displayed directly in the Twitter timeline.

Instagram photos now appear too large for the space provided on Twitter and are cropped as a result.

In a status update on its website, Twitter said: "Users are experiencing issues with viewing Instagram photos on Twitter. This is due to Instagram disabling its Twitter cards integration, and as a result, photos are being displayed using a pre-cards experience."

The move shows the growing rivalry between Twitter and Instagram, which was bought by Facebook earlier this year. By disabling Twitter cards, Instagram will force Twitter users to click through to its site to see the entire image.

Social networks are growing increasingly protective of their platforms as competition rises for users and for advertising revenue. Twitter has, in recent months, tightened its rules on what third-party applications are able to do, in a move that his been interpreted by some observers as an attempt to keep users on its platform.
