The shooter that wounded two people by opening fire at the historic Sultanahmet Square has been killed by security forces.
Witness accounts state the shooter threatened the soldier on duty at
the Topkapı Palace gates with his weapon and took the soldier’s G3 army
gun. He then began shooting.
The shooter is reportedly Syrian, according to daily Hurriyet.
A soldier and a security guard have been wounded.
Security forces surrounded and emptied the square. The clashes still continue inside the Palace.
Governor of Istanbul Huseyin Avni Mutlu stated that the shooter's aims
are "purely personal" and denied receiving any official information on
the shooter's nationality, daily Hurriyet reported.
