Voters across Scotland have started casting ballots that will decide the future make-up of the United Kingdom amid polls that show the race between unionists and nationalists is too close to call.
Around 4.2 million Scots are voting Thursday in a race that will determine whether Scotland exits a 307-year-old union with England.
A poll from YouGov, a market research firm, puts those backing independence on 48% and those against on 52%. However, with 4% of voters undecided not much separates the two campaigns.
Several other polls published over the last 48 hours have shown a similar margin of difference, indicating that independence is only a few percentage points short of a majority.
