Baku 2015 and the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a Wrestling test event to be held in Baku on 16-19 April, ahead of the inaugural European Games in June.
The MoU was signed at the Baku 2015 headquarters by Namiq Aliyev, First Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and Board Member of United World Wrestling, and Elchin Safarov, Corporate Director of the Baku 2015 European Games.
Mr Aliyev said: “I am delighted to sign this MoU between the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and BEGOC. The test event will give our athletes, coaches and officials a taste of the excitement to come in the European Games.”
A total of 400 wrestlers are expected to take part in the event, which will take place at the Heydar Aliyev Arena between 16 and 19 April.
Mr Safarov said: “Test events are an important part of BEGOC’s preparations for the first ever European Games, and contribute to raising awareness for what will be a much-anticipated competition.
“Azerbaijan has a rich history in wrestling, and I know that both the test event and the Baku 2015 competition will attract a lot of local support.”
The Heydar Aliyev Arena has held over 30 international events in various sporting disciplines. During the Baku 2015 European Games, the venue will be used for Wrestling from June 13-18, as well as for Judo on 25-28 June and Sambo on 22 June.
Media accreditation has now opened for the Wrestling and Boxing test events, which will both be staged on 16-19 April. For more information on accreditation and the European Games, visit www.baku2015.com. The deadline for test event accreditation is 30 March 2015.
