Arsenal are eyeing up a move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling in January with Arsene Wenger adding him to his list of top targets.
Smalling, who was rumoured to be close to joining Arsenal in the summer, eventually stayed at Old Trafford but he has endured a miserable campaign so far.
And amid talk that Louis van Gaal could sell the England man in the new year, reports say Arsenal are interested in doing business.
No bid has been made yet but Wenger is known to be a long-term fan, and with Smalling also able to play at full-back, he would add versatility.
The 24-year-old is valued at about £10million.
