Azerbaijan is the first country to sign the European Convention on the manipulation of sports competitions among other countries in the 13th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport held in Macolin, Switzerland.
Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, the 13th Secretary General of the Council of Europe was also present at the signing ceremony.
Azad Rahimov represented Azerbaijan at the conference, the Ministry’s press service said.
Azad Rahimov was present at the opening of the conference as he is one of the co-chairs of the conference.
As known, Azerbaijan will be chairing the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers till October 31.
Azad Rahimov made a speech at the opening session of the conference as the chairman of the committee.
The Minister noted Azerbaijan is hosting a number of international sports events. He talked about actions done to prevent spectators’ violence in Baku 2015 First European Games. Azerbaijani minister stressed the importance of struggling against corruption in sports. Azerbaijan always cooperated with the Council of Europe in this area, Mr. Rahimov stressed.
During the session, several resolutions, including “Corruption in the Governance of Sport”, “Current Political Issues of Pan-European Sports Co-operation”, “The role of government in executing the World Anti-Doping Code in 2015”, “ Review of 1985 European Convention on Spectator Violence and Misbehaviour at Sports Events”, were adopted.
