There are uniquely talented individuals in the scientific world whose innovations brought to science and services provided are perceived in full capacity as the time passes and scientific thinking develops and becomes richer. Talented scientist, public figure, beautiful woman and mother Aida Nasir gyzy Imanguliyeva is one of such scientists and individuals.
Aida Nasir gyzy Imanguliyeva was born in Baku, on October 10, 1939. Her father Nasir Imanguliyev, a famous journalist, pedagogue, honored scientist, was one of those who had established the fundaments of the Azerbaijani press, and worked as the editor-in-chief of “Baki” and “Baku” newspapers for many years.
Her mother Govhar Imanguliyeva (Sultanzade) was born in an aristocratic family in Shamakhy.
Aida khanum was personifying wonderful features distinctive to an Azerbaijani woman. Her way of life was reflection of soul of a mother, a woman and human moving towards unity, connection of moral values that are basic for life and mankind.
Maybe it is the reason why this great scientist, who was the first woman – orientalist – doctor of sciences in our history, devoted her life to studying the Eastern culture and literature, which is tied to the history and traditions of our nation, going as deep as to thousand years, as well as her intention to restore relations between our past and present.
Aida khanum Imanguliyeva was an active orientalist-scientist who earned respect of the scientific public. She was a member of the Presidium of All-Union Oriental Studies Society and the All-Union Coordination Council on survey of Eastern literature in the former USSR. As a representative of Azerbaijan’s orientalists’ school, she gave lectures in scientific congresses, symposiums, sessions held in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Poltava, Dushanbe, Tbilisi and other cities.
Literature-philosophic system of thinking unifying the East and the West, - “Silk Route” inscribed by Aida Imanguliyeva in the public perception, - is not just studies of the world culture, mankind values, but also reflection of the national self-consciousness.
Scientific work of Aida Imanguliyeva is very rich. Her essays and scientific works such as “Issues of Arabic philology”, “Issues of Eastern Philology”, “Eastern problems: history and modernity” show that scientific interest and researches of the scientist are not only tied with philology, but also other public-humanitarian sciences. Her activity is wide and multisided. In her numerous scientific writings (3 monographs (“Mikhail Nuayme and Union of Pens”, “Jubran Khalil Jubran” and Coryphaeus of new Arabic literary” and more than 70 scientific essays) she showed synthesis of the Eastern and Western cultures, development of creative method and new literary tendencies. It is a big ground for future studies of not only Arabic literary, but also new Eastern literature.
Aida khanum was very loyal to her life mission not only within her scientific activities, but also with her organizational and leadership activity – protecting and developing Azerbaijani national self-consciousness within the atmosphere and national regime she lived in. Talented young scientist Aida Imanguliyeva defended her Ph.D. thesis successfully and received a scientific degree of a candidate of Philological Sciences in Moscow, in March 1967. After that she continued her scientific work at near and Middle Eastern Nations Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. First, she worked as a senior scientific employee in “Arabic literary” group and since 1972 she became the head of the group. In 1976, she started working as the head of the “Arabic Philology” department newly established within the institute. While Aida khanum was leading that department, 10 orientalists defended their Ph.D. theses under her guidance, and were rewarded with the scientific degree of a candidate of Philological Sciences.
Aida Imanguliyeva, who was taking active part in the scientific and public-political life of the Oriental Studies Institute, was appointed deputy director of the institute on scientific issues in 1988 due to her hard work and activity. A year later, she defended her Doctor’s thesis that she was working on for a long time.
Thus, Aida Imanguliyeva, Azerbaijan’s first female doctor of sciences and first professor on Arabian literary, continued to rise in stairs of high-ranked positions. In august of 1991, she began fulfilling the functions of the director of the Oriental Studies Institute and was appointed to the position of Director in December of the same year.
Along with scientific works, Aida Imanguliyeva was also engaged in pedagogical work. She was giving lectures on Arabic literature at the Oriental Studies faculty at the Azerbaijan State University. By a decree of the High Attestation Commission acting on behalf of the USSR Minister’s Council, she was awarded a scientific degree of professor in March of 1991.
Speaking about scientific and public-political activity of Aida Imanguliyeva, we should note her translation activities. For instance, in 70s, jointly with Mr. Garayev, an Arabic teacher of the Oriental Studies faculty and candidate of sciences of philology, she published a collection of stories called “Human and bird”. In addition to it, Aida khanum’s hard work in the sphere of translation of anthology consisting of Iraqi writers and translated by the employees of the “Arabic philology” department should be noted.
Aida Imanguliyeva wrote foreword to many books on Arabic literature published by republican publishing houses in different years. She was also the scientific editor of numerous books.
Aida Imanguliyeva was very sentimental, attentive, kind and slender person. She was always demonstrating interest and kindness to her relatives and trying to solve their problems.
Daily hard work regime could not deprive Aida Imanguliyeva of her womanhood. First of all, she was a beautiful woman and very careful MOTHER loving her family and husband. Aida Imanguliyeva was paying much attention to upbringing her lovely daughters Nargiz and Mehriban. Despite she was overloaded with her scientific and administrative works, she would never forget her lovely grandchildren, and was taking care of them.
Aida Imanguliyeva passed away on September 19th, 1992.
Human is a temporal creature in this world. However, in this temporal life, human has a unique capability, through which he can earn immortality, with a beautiful work and activity causing benefits to others. Within her short life, Aida Imanguliyeva met all these conditions and set her monument within the hearts. Thus, she earned immortality during her life.
