“Switzerland is interested in deepening relations with Azerbaijan in various aspects of life," said President of the Council of States of the Swiss Confederation Jean-René Fournier as he met with speaker of Azerbaijan`s parliament Ogtay Asadov in Baku, SIA reports referring to Azertag.

Fournier emphasized that expansion of relations at the level of parliaments serves common purposes, adding this contributes to bringing peoples closer to each other and deepening economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries. Noting that Switzerland supports energy projects initiated by Azerbaijan, the president of the Council of States praised the country’s achievements during the years of independence.

Speaker Asadov described Azerbaijan and Switzerland as friendly and partner countries. He said Azerbaijan attaches special importance to deepening cooperation with Switzerland that was one of the first countries to recognize its independence. He mentioned that reciprocal visits and meetings of the heads of state on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos contribute to deepening bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Switzerland.

The Speaker hailed mutual visits of the inter-parliamentary friendship groups.

Asadov drew the Swiss delegation’s attention to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, describing it as one the most painful issue for the rapidly developing Azerbaijan. He expressed his confidence that the conflict will soon be solved fairly in compliance with norms and principles of international law, based on the principle of territorial integrity of countries.
