Former US assistant secretary of state for democracy and human rights, ex-president of Freedom House, Senior Director for Human Rights and Human Freedom at the McCain Institute for International Leadership David Kramer stated that the Russia Today (RT) channel assets in the country must be seized in compliance with two European court rulings against Russia stipulating shareholder debt repayment in the now defunct Yukos oil firm.
Note that it was stated by a person who was condemning any legal investigation against Baku branch of Radio Lyberty hailing the United Stated. The Radio Liberty financed by the US Congress has been broadcasting in the East and South East Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East countries which have been under USSR influence after the Second World War. During these years, the radio has applied influence means not only to the countries, but also to the minorities in these regions. All these measures aim to increase influence of the US in these regions.
Kramer is a person who called on the Obama Administration to take a hard line on Azerbaijan for sealing off the premises of the radio and beginning an investigation on its activity. He proposed to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan, to apply a visa ban for officials and to boycott the first European Games.
Official Baku stated that no one is prosecuted for his/her freedom of speech, opinion and media, as well as political views and the investigations related to Radio Liberty are part of measures taken for the state security.
But now Kramer calls on to close the RT office in Washington. All these are indicators of double standards against Azerbaijan. Kramer’s changing position proves that the goals of some forces which apply double standards against the country are not based on the international principles.
