Azerbaijani Ministry Foreign Affairs (MFA) has commented on Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland's statement on the death of journalist Rasim Aliyev.
The Ministry’s spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland's statement regarding the death of journalist Rasim Aliyev doesn’t suit the essence of the criminal case and serves the case’s being politicized . “The statement doesn’t accurately specify the journalistic activity of the deceased Rasim Aliyev. Unfortunately, some circles’ deliberately politicizing every criminal case in Azerbaijan has become customary. Unfortunately, deliberately politicizing every single criminal case by some circles in Azerbaijan became usual,”stated Ministry’s spokesman.
“The necessary investigation is underway by law enforcement bodies to investigate the criminal case on the death of Rasim Aliyev. Persons found guilty of the crime will be punished by the court. Protection of rights and interests of citizens, ensuring the rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms, including freedom of the media are the high goal and one of the key priorities of the Azerbaijani government,” added Hikmat Hajiyev.
There is a close dialogue between the state institutions and civil society and one can see it in the discussion of important issues including human rights. Though the representatives of the Council of Europe take part at the meeting characterizing such dialogues, being the Secretary General of the Council of Europe unaware of that is surprising.
We urge the CoE and all other circles to stay away from attempts to politicize the tragedy that caused the death of Rasim Aliyev".
