David Cameron has confessed that he has put himself on a diet after overindulging over the Christmas holidays.
The Prime Minister said he was watching what he eats and had also upped his exercise programme by going for a run every other day.
He said: “I have put on a bit of Christmas. I can feel a bit of tightening around the belt buckle.
“I was out pounding the pavements on a run yesterday and I will be doing a bit of light dieting over the next few weeks and hopefully I will shed the pounds.
“I’m running a couple of miles every other day. It is easier to put it on than to take it off.”
While he does not weigh himself, Mr Cameron said he was aware he had put on the pounds after photographs of him taking part in an annual Christmas mud run in his constituency showed he was less trim than in recent years.
He told BBC Radio West Midlands he enjoyed running along the canals in Birmingham although his early starts meant he was often confronted with the “detritus” of late night drinkers.
And he disclosed that he was expert at dodging dog mess while out jogging.
“I am pretty nifty on my feet,” he said. “I can tell you know how to dodge those.”
Mr Cameron also said that he is an early riser, trying to get up before 6am to start work, and usually going to bed after watching the 10 O’Clock News on television.
He said that his nights were sometimes interrupted by his four-year-old daughter, Florence, adding: “I do try and get some sleep.
“I try to go to bed, watch the 10 O’Clock News and go to bed.”
