A man shot a woman and then himself in a Chicago Nordstrom store Friday night in what appears to be a domestic incident, police said.
Officers responded to a reported shooting at 8:30 p.m. CT and two gunshot victims were found at the scene, News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro told USA TODAY.
The alleged shooter shot his girlfriend, a seasonal employee at the department store, before turning the gun on himself.
The man was found dead at the scene and Chicago Fire Department paramedics transported the female victim to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she is in critical condition.
When shoppers heard the gunshots a panic ensued and one woman described a "stampede" on the store's escalator, The Chicago Tribune reports.
None of the store's customers were threatened and no other injuries were reported.
While police could not say the identities or ages of the victims, they confirmed both were adults.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, Officer Alfaro said.
