A man has died after falling three storeys from an escalator at a branch of Debenhams.
The unnamed man is believed to have plummeted in front of shoppers from the third floor of the chain’s flagship department store on Oxford Street.
Police and paramedics tried to help the man after the incident at 6.15pm yesterday, but he could not be saved.
A witness said: ‘I heard a loud bang, commotion followed and a man was lying on the ground. I initially thought it was fireworks.’
Five people were treated for shock by London Ambulance Service.
