The opening ceremony of the X Republican Olympiad on Informatics among university students, dedicated to 17 May - World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, was held at Gafgaz (Caucasus) University, SIA informs.
The Olympiad is co-organzed by the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT), Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Ministry of Education and Institute of Information Technologies of ANAS.Technical support to the Olympiad is provided by Gafgaz University.
The event was attended by members of the organizing committee, representatives of universities and teams.
It was reported 63 teams from higher educational institutions have been registered to participate in the Olympics and the registration of 56 of them was confirmed.
Under the terms of the competition, maximum 5 teams from each educational institution can register in the Olympic Games and only 1 team showing best results will acquire right to participate in the second (final) stage.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Olympiad, Deputy Minister of Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizadeh praised the organization of the Olympiad:
“It is gratifying that such an Olympiad is held in our country. You should know that there is also a rapid development in this area in our country thanks to the care and attention of President Ilham Aliyev. In addition to being a competition, the Olympiad at the same time is of great importance for you in establishing friendly relations and exchange of views to achieve success in your future activities. Therefore, we organize the Olympics in order to create conditions for your teamwork. Because it is impossible to develop without teamwork and sharing of knowledge,” said the Deputy Minister.
Then Rector of Gafgaz University Professor Ahmet Sanich addressed the event: “We are pleased to host the Olympic Games, which has been organized since 2007. Information technologies have a special place among the fastest growing areas in the country. Benefits for you from the Olympics will be new friends along with the exchange of knowledge,” said the rector of the university.
Following the opening event, the first round of the Olympiad was launched. 50 teams (each team of 3 students) from 14 higher educational institutions participated in the first stage. The teams were given 5 hours to solve 10 algorithmic tasks. The evaluation of the tasks was carried out using automatic online evaluation system PC2-9.2.4.
The second (final) round of the competition will be held at the Institute of Information Technologies of ANAS. The winners will be awarded valuable prizes.
