First meeting of the working group SPECA-TASIM-CAREC, created on a commission from the Cabinet of Ministers, held at the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT) under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister Elmir Velizadeh.
Speaking at the meeting of the Working Group, consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Communications and High Technologies, Elmir Velizadeh stressed the importance of the project Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) for the region. The project is Azerbaijan’s initiative put forward in 2008, Deputy Minister said.
The Deputy Minister noted that the project is of great interest in the international arena and in this regard, the UN General Assembly passed resolutions on TASIM at the 64th and 66th sessions of the organization on 21 December 2009 and 21 December 2012. He also brought to the attention that at its 67 session on September 4, 2013 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution supporting Azerbaijan’s initiative on creation of the Eurasian Connectivity Alliance (EuraCA).
Speaking about plans for further activities of the project, which has received much support on an the international scale, Elmir Velizadeh stressed the importance of expanding cooperation with SPECA (UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia) and CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation) in this direction.
Then the head of the Working Group on TASIM project Zaur Hasanov made a presentation on the project, who informed the members of the Working Group on the implementation of the project. It was noted that the implementation of TASIM will open up opportunities to eliminate the “digital divide” between Asia and Europe, and also will play a fundamental role in the economic development of the region. Then the meeting was continued with discussions on the project, the participants shared their views on the initiative of SPECA-TASIM-CAREC.
The meeting also elected the officials of the Working Group. Deputy Minister of Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizadeh was elected chairman of the Working Group.
At the end of the meeting, it was decided to prepare Action Plan for the program SPECA-TASIM-CAREC and its promotion in the upcoming events, as well as development of relevant concepts for the program, submission of the issues for re-discussion at the next meeting of the Working Group.
